Tuesday Oct 31

So today we watched to the end of Renaissance Man and then had a few minutes left over so we watched two trailers relevant to Othello. The first one is the film version we are going to be using in this class:

Monday Oct 30

We are going to be working with this assignment on Monday and Tuesday this week.

It is a Webquest - a short assignment for developing background knowledge on Othello.

We will finish Renaissance Man Monday or Tuesday this week, too.

Friday Oct 27

We almost finished the Renaissance Man film study. Almost.

I wanted to show this to both classes but didn't get a chance to, much to my chagrin. What a great speech, relevant to the film study as one of the characters in the movie, recites this same speech from Henry V.

If you wanted to watch to the end of the film, it's here.

I did speak to a few about the handing things in on D2L; they are due today.

We will finish the film study on Monday and then start Othello then, too.

Thursday Oct 26

Today we continued our run through the film Renaissance Man.

We chatted about the fact that young men had to play the female roles during Shakespeare's time and ... <<Shudder>> ... iambic pentameter ... as they came up for discussion in the film.

A much better class than yesterday - the new projector actually showed the film! And we got to about the 1-hour mark ...

Wed Oct 25

This day ... did not go according to plan, exactly.

It started with not being able to get a projector that worked for this class. We had to imagine a lot of the film that we are using as an introduction to Othello.

We did do a brief introduction of Film shots and Angles. The Six Film Shots and the Five Angles od Films was a powerpoint deck I used to have but has disappeared in some strange manner.

We did enjoy the first 20 or so minutes of Renaissance Man, a great film with Danny DeVito.

Monday and Tuesday Oct 24

So ... a little bit of the D2L and a little bit of an introduction to Othello

Here are the things we watched in class today...

As well as getting a Plot summary, too. And Why We Study Shakespeare at Bishop Reding...

Thursday Oct 19

Hello parents!

We are just about to finish the unit on Catcher int he Rye. We've been reading together for about a month and have a second assignment due Friday, October 20th. The details are on the right-hand side of this blog.

We have also been using the Ministry approved Desire to Learn (D2L) platform to augment the in-class learning. Your child should be able to show you what we are doing in this secure online learning environment at home. This is what we used today, helping students to extend their learning and learn about good digital citizenship at the same time.

If you have any questions between now and the end of the semester, please call the school or drop a comment on this blog.

Wed Oct 18

Today ... I felt like I was missing something ... like reading the novel. That would be ok, except we finished reading the novel and got to work on the character sketches online together.

While students worked together on getting the character sketches done, I showed everyone an updated mark and we conferenced about PT Night.

Tuesday Oct 17

Well, we finished the book. Literally. Today.

We finished the reading for the Catcher in the Rya and had some discussion about why it was banned. Some interesting ideas floated around the room, too.

In any case, we got these questions assigned to us:

And talked a bit about PT Night and ... we also chatted about the D2L assignments to be done, too.

Catcher in the Rye explained

Man, what a day. I forgot my charger at home and so wasn't able to get this posted until well after school.

In any case, we got to the end of Chapter 24 today and got a couple of questions for homework. I also did the amazing photorealistic version of Holden's future career position, too.

We also chatted about this quote today too:

Wed and Thursday Oct 12

So Wednesday was a login and get in to the D2L Catcher "First Discuss the Quote" assignment kind of a day.

I'm really still interested in getting people logged in and learning with their phones or other digital tools.

On Thursday, we did a few things to the good. We read to the end of Chapter 19, got questions 13 and 17 assigned for homework and then got some homework and tests returned. We even got Part Two Due Date posted!

Tuesday Oct 10

I am very late with this post. In my defence, the wireless was not working in our portable today.

We read to the end of Chapter 17 today- we went on a date with Sally Hayes and suggested we go and live in the woods of Vermont or Maine.

I did share the idea that this had been done in the meantime. Not that I'm suggesting anyone run off into the woods after high school, of course.

It's a career option, though .... (please know that I'm kidding)

We got the questions 11 and 12 for homework. I will post the due dates for Part 2 of the Catcher unit shortly. Woot!

Now that you know about Chun Yow Fat, I'm glad to also report that we got everyone ... virtually everyone logged in to the D2L class site for this class. Good work.

I did post a pretty straightforward assignment for Catcher in the Rye. After students were done that, I asked them to move on to the Introduction Unit that I titled the Blended Learning Unit (BLU).

There are four more activities in that unit, from BLUA1 to BLUA4.

Have a great weekend - come back on Tuesday!

Wed Oct 4

Quiz day.

We read to the end of Chapter 15

Then I told everyone to log in to the D2L.

All good.

Tuesday Oct 2

Tuesday. We moved forward this day, this Tuesday.

Read tot he end of Chapter 14, which is page 136. After that we worked together on the material that is due tomorrow.

I will be starting to use the D2L link for classroom activities, too - make sure you can sign in!

Monday Oct 2

Whoa, it's October ... it's a short week, too. Friday is a PD Day. And Monday is a holiday for all of us!

Part one of the novel study is due on Wednesday. I did chat about that and the quiz we are having on that day. See the right-hand side of the blog what is due on Wednesday, by the way.

We were also assigned number 9 for homework after reading to the end of chapter 12 today, too.
